Trusting God's Love

This week, as love is celebrated all around us, I’ve been reflecting on what love truly means—not just in our relationships with others, but in our relationship with God.

When I think about the people I love most, it’s not about extravagant gifts or elaborate plans; it’s simply about being in their presence. The most meaningful moments aren’t about what we’re doing, but about who we’re with.

And then I think about God—who IS love (1 John 4:8)—and how often we run from Him. Not because He isn’t near, but because we feel undeserving of His love. We allow our past mistakes, guilt, and shame to convince us that His love isn’t really for us. But the truth is, God’s love isn’t based on our worthiness; it’s based on His heart and character.

The Foundation of Love is Trust

What is the foundation of love? Trust. Every healthy relationship is built on trust—without it, love cannot thrive. And if that’s true for our human relationships, how much more is it true for our relationship with God?

Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”

If we don’t trust Him, how can we fully experience His love? If we are constantly questioning His plans, doubting His goodness, and hesitating to surrender, we’re putting up walls that block us from receiving His love in its fullness.

Why Do We Run From Love?

Many of us struggle to accept God’s love because we compare it to human love, which is often conditional and flawed. We project past hurts, disappointments, and betrayals onto Him, fearing that He will reject us too. But Romans 8:38-39 assures us:

“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

His love is constant, unwavering, and unbreakablebut we have to be willing to receive it.

Taking the Next Step: Being in His Presence

Once we decide to trust God’s love, what comes next? Like any relationship, being in His presence is key to deepening our connection with Him. The more time we spend with Him—through prayer, worship, reading His Word—the more we understand who He is and how deeply He loves us.

Psalm 16:11 says, “You make known to me the path of life; in Your presence there is fullness of joy; at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”

God doesn’t just want us to acknowledge His love from a distance; He wants us to experience it daily. He wants us to walk in the confidence of knowing that we are fully known and fully loved.

A Love That Transforms

This Valentine’s week, let’s take a moment to reflect on the greatest love we will ever know—God’s love for us. Instead of running from it, let’s choose to trust it. Instead of questioning it, let’s choose to rest in it. Because when we do, we’ll find a love that transforms everything.

So, I ask you: What’s one way you can step into trusting His love more this week? Take a moment to pray, surrender, and open your heart to the One who has loved you all along.
